I have Calibre saving its files to directories on cloud servers (Box, Mega, etc.) so that I have an automatic cloud backup without worrying about syncing. I am doing something similar to what I think you want - but with some differences, of course.
Would that work? Or even better, is there a way to have full access to the calibre interface running on my pi from my laptop using some linux server technique? I'm primarily a windows user, but i dabble in linux from time to time on my pi. Since the pi would never actually edit the library, i hope that no mismatched versions of the library would overwrite one another, but I'm not sure. I read that this setup would work as long as i always open calibre on one device at a time, but i would like to keep the pi always turned on. I know that i could install dropbox and have both my laptop and my pi using the same cloud directory for the library. The thing is, i still want to add books and edit metadata from my laptop, the pi would be headless. I have a raspberry pi 3B+ lying around and wanted to turn it into a local server, always turned on. The problem is that my laptop must be turned on and at home. I configured a ddns and all and i can access my books from anywhere. I have a calibre collection on my laptop that i turned into a OPDS server to access my books from my ipad.
